Craving Clarity

Sit with the word clarity for a moment, breathe into it and allow whatever feelings you receive from the breath of clarity to emerge. What is your vision of clarity now?  If you were to draw a picture of it for yourself, what would it look like?

Just the sound of this simple noun—clarity—has an energy to it that creates a stillness within. And with this stillness, comes an ability to empty, to surrender, to allow, to see-feel-hear the messages that are within us so that we can BE……… Clear!  Just allow your breath to take you to this wonderful place of clarity by breathing in deeply… the word BE and then slowly breathing out the word Clear.

I love taking one word and sitting with it for a little while – taking in its meaning within my inner world and how it makes me feel in relationship to my outer experience of the world around me. And that outer experience is typically about people, places and things that we are making decisions about.

What does "clarity" mean to you when you hear it or say it? Here are a few thoughts to ponder about this magnificent word—straight from the dictionary:

quality of being clearly expressed

clearness in thinking

quality of being clear in sound or image

There is a quality of simplicity that comes into view when we become clear, and when we become clear we create movement—the energy of moving forward. And when we enable our ability to move forward, we are clear! This is what we crave… this is why we crave clarity in our minds, body and even our physical space, because when we are clear we are free from angst and suffering.

When you desire clarity, what are you really looking for? Aren't you really in pursuit of an answer? Stay in this relationship or move on? Manifest an inspired idea for business, a new design, a painting, my book? Take that new job or keep the one I have? Fix up my home or move to a new one? Buy the purple flowers or the red ones? Order bottled water or tap?

Big or small, we all want the answer—someone or some sign to appear like a bolt of lightning to tell us what we need to do.

So what is clarity really and what gets in our way of having it?

Clarity is about having space isn't it… a clearing out so you can see, feel, hear, touch, smell what is really right here, right now—in your mind, your home, your business and even in your body.

“Awaken the mind without fixing it anywhere.” Kungo Kyo

No wonder we crave clarity – Webster defines it as being clear, simple and lucid. We came into this world with this craving and when we grasp or attach too hard to it, we actually push it away because this clutching energy creates an energy block. It stops the flow of clarity.

The ancient Taoist sages understood the desire and the need for clarity so well, and consulted the I Ching oracle – the backbone of traditional Chinese medicine, feng shui and tai ch’i chuan for example. You may consult the oracle for clarity if you wish as I often do myself.  However, I suggest that you begin with a few simple approaches that will increase the clarity you crave.

  • Begin reducing the clutter that is occupying your physical space.
  • Open up your mind space to release unhealthy and toxic thoughts to make room for answers.
  • Spend time determining what is right for you through writing—dedicate time to journal.
  • Open your hands and breathe through the palms of your hands to begin feeling the sense of flow as if truth and answers come to you through to you in this way rather than grasping.

“The work will teach you how to do it.” Estonian Proverb

Clarity flows by creating a natural practice of flow. Practice begins with believing you deserve the time to dedicate yourself to it. This begins the process. Enjoy your practice and the clarity that comes with it.
